8And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
10And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. 11The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 13And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. 14And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
According to scripture, The Garden of Eden was planted in the eastern region of Eden. And this is where God placed “the man whom he had formed.” This is where God caused every tree to grow which was for food and medicine and also where he made to grow the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
But where is this elusive Eden? We can go by the accounts of the scripture and try to retrace the location from the location of the rivers mentioned. But as we will soon learn, this is not such a simple task and it may even be completely impossible.
Can the rivers named here even be located today?
Well, the Euphrates is still known as the Euphrates today. But… is it the very river named in scripture? I believe there is a very low level of probability of this. My reasoning for this is the great flood of Noah’s time and other catastrophic events throughout time.
To begin with a deluge of the magnitude of the great flood would have completely changed the geography of the earth. And there are other events which would have contributed to this altered geography.
Let’s just think about Noah and his family.
They were stuck on the ark for quite a long time and once they stepped foot back on dry land, it had completely been transformed and they would not have known where they were. They would have completely begun life anew as God had intended for them to do. But they would not have lost their memories. So, would they not rename certain rivers and lands to correspond to the names of rivers and lands they had been familiar with?
Let’s not be concerned with the location of Eden or the Garden. Or even with the probability of whether the rivers named in the scripture pertain to any rivers in existence today. All we need to be concerned with is the fact that the Garden existed and man was created. As we grow in the Word, we will discover even deeper meanings from scripture.
There are those who focus on the meanings of the names of the rivers which has led to some interesting interpretations of the scripture. I find them both fascinating and meaningful whether or not they are true interpretations of the scripture.
It is very important that we not pervert nor alter the Word of God. And if this has already been done, rest assured that God has assured us that his Word shall be written upon the hearts of all his flock. If we seek out the Lord with all our hearts, we can not be deceived.
But let us not be foolish!
If we waver in our devotion to God the minions of satan can slip in unnoticed and lead us astray! This has been happening throughout time! Even the high priests in Jesus day had been led astray from the Word of God. Many preached the Word but did not practice it.
And since the time of Jesus, satan has been working overtime to trick and deceive the faithful. And many times it is done as it has been done throughout time… through the very core of our belief system… the church!
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that your church or mine or any other is falsely teaching the scripture. I’m simply saying that satan’s corruption is widespread and also finds a home within the church.
As I stated in the article “Easter Bunnies, Eggs and Baskets,” the church of old renamed many of the religious ceremonies and moved the date of their observance to correspond with the festivals of many pagan rituals. They made a compromise between the holy days of the church and the pagan ritual days of the heathen.
As I see it, this is an abomination!
You simply DO NOT compromise the Word of God for any reason! When it comes to the Word of God there is NO COMPROMISING to appease the heathen and win them over. Yes you should try to win over the hearts and minds of the heathen but not through compromise. You simply plant the seed. If the seed is planted within fertile soil it will flourish.
Once you compromise the religious ceremonies they become tainted and will fester. The only way to remedy this is to perform surgery. The infected parts must be cut away so that the healthy parts can heal and become clean again. There needs to be a complete cleansing of the religious world! Tainted religious ceremonies need to be reconfigured or completely done away with on a global scale!
I’m sure by now you see the futility I see in attempting something of this nature. For one thing how many people will even listen? How many people will even care? How many people will believe? Not many I assure you!
It will be just as it was in the days of our Lord Jesus Christ! Not even Christ could get them to listen… how on earth can I? What would these pastors, priests, preachers, clergymen and religious scholars say to me if I told them the ceremonies they have practiced since childhood and which have been indoctrinated into the religious world over many centuries are WRONG? They would call me a charlatan, an imbecile, a fool!
I would be laughed out of the religious world. I would be shunned, ostracized and ridiculed. Not so very much unlike Jesus. Forgive the comparison to Jesus. For I am nothing like him except that I am trying to teach that which so many don’t want to hear.
Now look at what I have done. I have completely gotten off target. Off script… off scripture. Well I do tend to get carried away at times. So on that note, I will sign off for this week. Until next week,
